Athens, Aug. 15, 2004
Defending Olympic champion Leontien Zijlaard-Van Moorsel of the Netherlands crashed out of the 2004 Olympic women’s road race with two laps remaining.
The Dutchwoman fell at the end of the seventh lap of the nine-lap 118.8 km race around the streets of Athens, taking three other riders with her.
She had been sitting second in a line of riders chasing down breakaway leader Susan Palmer-Komar of Canada and lost control as she turned her head to look behind her.
After hitting the road heavily she walked to the side of the track clutching her head and slumped to the ground to receive medical attention.
The 34-year-old was hoping to repeat her Sydney medal treble.
